Aphetic Also synopic and apocopic	PLL	Respectively: cutting away the beginning, middle or end of words when spoken or written.	Ref: Book 2 chapter 3

Aquatransporter	STL	An extremely fast seagoing cargo and personnel transporter.	More info: Book 2 chapter1

Barchan	PLL	Extremely large and high wave formation(s) of solid substance usually create by strong winds	Ref: Book 3 chapter 6

BeWe	LLL FW	A colloquialism for some Far Western Sector islanders	Origin pre-thermal – seamen’s expression

Brittlestar	PLL	A pretty sea creature with five arms.	The brittlestar is covered with eyes that can see in all directions. This makes Auranna’s remark very poignant. Ref: Book 2 Chapter 8.

Canoecar	US	A pre-thermal mobile voice communicator.	They are generally around as junk but they are still used locally in the ‘far’ sectors. More info: Book 3 chapter 15 Sometimes the word, canoecar, is used as slang for Infoport.

Coltan	PLL	Coltan = Columbite-tantalite ore When refined becomes tantalum; a valued substance.	Tantalum can retain a high electrical charge and is needed for creating micro-capacitors Ref: Book 2 chapter 10

(Completely) Dogless	PLL US	A place without dogs or someone who does not even have the company of an animal for comfort.	Thorlainen’s initial state of loneliness was brought one-step up from absolute by the appearance of the dog.

Ei	LLL NS	An expression used both as a light or firm ‘No’.

El-shella	STL	The most prestigious Tellurian award for academic achievement at all levels of science, art and education.	Secretly, the award is generally believed to have been started pre-thermally by a society located in the Egyptian area of the Pentazone but, of course, it would be the end for anyone who openly suggested the idea was not Tellurian in origin.

Fingereer	STL	Any point on the surface of a controlling device that can be touched by a person to cause a variation in or switch a parameter or set of parameters.

FoC	STL	This huge plant produces a smelt similar to rotting corpses.	FoC = Flower of Corpses - Amorphophallus Titanium. The Nagiid had this plant promoted to be the emblem of the Tellurian empire. Many found it to be an emblem of his twisted mind.

HiSSing Circle	STL	An area where sound is generated and concentrated while other intruding sounds are effectively suppressed.	Used where verbal communication is difficult due often to interference of heavy and metallic noises. Ref: Book 2

Ilo	LLL NS	Usually a young woman, who would be hired out to entertain others.	Lower class ilos (but not exclusively lower class) usually negotiated their trade in and around mustamarts.

Infoport	STL	A voice and visual communicator, which also provides the authorities with a pinpoint location of the carrier.	The Infoport is also an amplifier for the vaavikki implant or manacle code and will immediately bring up an alert if the Infoport is not adjacent to source it is amplifying. It also brings up an alert if two or more carriers are together in an unofficially designated area.

Irukandjis	PLL	A tiny but extremely poisonous tropical jellyfish

Ka’zarthe	STL	The name for Tellus military personnel (Usually infantry but also crowd guidance squads in overground urban areas).	These human beings are singularly processed for military duty and are genetically modified from birth to enhance and maximize muscle and bone mass.

Kyms	US	An abbreviation for a sum of money (stipis) used for a bribe, or an underhand or secretive transaction.	Kyms = Keep Your Mouth Shut

Le Tronne’	PLL	A large walled plain in the southwest area of the moon.	Lunar base Ref: Book 3 chapter 6

Mayo	STL	A form of adult processing where there is no physical violence.

Mustamart	LLL NS	A place where the low life of Tellus generally trade	This is the only place an NCB, like Thorlainen, could purchase or barter anything.

Nagiid	STL	The general title of the self-appointed saviour-prince of all Tellus.	The name of Nagiid was insisted upon by one of the major groups in the Pentazone who were still permitted the use of their own LLL. 'Naggles' is the derogatory name used by those who feel there are universal short-comings in this almighty being.

Ochlesis	PLL	A very unhealthy physical and mental state caused by extreme overcrowding.	A common problem deliberately brought about by the authorities to subjugate the NCBs of Tellus and used as a form of passive public punishment to deter others from resisting the system. Note: Hogtroff would have known of this condition but he did not know the word for it.

Oenopides	PLL	A crater on the north west edge of the moon	Named after Oenopides, the Greece mathematician and astronomer. Ref: Book 3 chapter 6

PASC	STL	A local Tellurian control centre, to which every individual Tellurian within its jurisdiction must dutifully submit	PASC = Prefect Area Surveillance Centre. The sound of the word PASC with a slyly added 'a' - 'Paska' introduces a derogatory (i.e. rude) term in the northern LLL

Pekoons	STL	Credit status carried on vaavikki implants of accepted members of Tellurian society, or in the case of NCBs on manacles.

Pentazone	STL	An area southeast of the Central Sector, in which the richest, most affluent and sometimes the most educated of the Tellurian Empire reside.	Anything that comes from the Pentazone has status. Chitmaa rightly, at least in her eyes, boasts of her El-Shella awards from the Pentazone Ref: Book 1 chapter 9

Pooko	LLL NS	A cheap general-purpose sheath knife.

Rhykanologist	PLL	A specialist, who studies and practices the planing of wood.	Practically a lost art after the thermals

ROG	STL	A desalinator (i.e., it produces fresh drinking water) This type of equipment is used both at sea, in desert coastal areas or where there is water contamination.	ROG = Reverse Osmosis Generator. All seagoing engineers have been acquainted with them since (it is believed) well before the thermals.

Sapling	STL	Human offspring either naturally or battery brought to term.

Sectors	STL	Geographical areas. From the centre the sectors radiate out like a compass rose and the distance and concentrically from the centre the areas are designated, for example: Near Southern, Southern and Far Southern	A subtle way to emphasise the importance of the central sector and psychologically progressively subjugate the periphery sectors
Selvä	LLL NS	A light expression that states that the speaker understands and will comply.

Sigme Naggles add due vat!	LLL NS	An irreverent saying that could easily be mistakened for, and rhymed closely with, the liturgical intonations the virtue ventors used when adoring the Emperor in the presence of their adherers (i.e., Sic me Nagiid adjuvat). Sic me Nagiid adjuvat = So help me Nagiid	The original LLL meaning of the saying has been lost but it roughly implies : "So stick me (damn you), Nagiid, and add your taxes."

Stipis	STL	Hard copy money as opposed to pekoons or digital credit.

Stuub	STL	A public house, usually designed to produce a certain atmosphere, for consuming ‘legally’ approved intoxicants.

Tehelkamatic	US	A type of person who is willing to sacrifice his liberty and comforts of life to bring to light certain ‘anomalies’ of truth that the system would prefer to keep in the dark.	Origin pre-thermal.

Thalassophobia	PLL	Fear of the sea	A fear induced by processing, to cause people ‘voluntarily’ avoid going near the sea. Used on people in (e.g., coastal) communities where it is difficult or expensive to restrict their movement. Ref: Book 1 chapter 16

Tio	LLL NS	A light expression to state an approximate quantity of ten

Tori	LLL NS	An open square in a town	These are area where people congregate and where the more respectable open markets usually operate.

Trivium and Quadrivium	PLL US	An expression for a formal affluent education.	Chitmaa uses this in a derogatory sense to express the uselessness of that kind of education when prolonged. Ref: Book 1 chapter 9

Vaavikki (implant)	STL	Most people with any status carry a Vaavikki, which carries their ID, medical info and credit.	More info: Book 2 chapter 14

Vespa Mandarinia	PLL	It is the name a very large wasp with a 3-4.5 cm. The queen can be 5.5cm	The name given to one of the Ka’zarthe military Auroch class hydrofoils. More info: Book 2 chapter 8

Wollemy	US	Some living thing that is isolated and forgotten forever by the rest of the universe	This could apply to prisoners in solitary confinement but Thorlainen truly identified himself with the Wollemi tree.

Xeno	PLL	A strange or foreign being

Yotta-yapper	US	A person, who can speak an exceedingly large number of words in a short space of time.	Yotta = 10 to the power of 24
