The Galactic Catastrophe

Zak B. Tjewels' book, From the Depths of Heaven, the first in the series, Serious Pink & Satin Yellow, leads us into a world of fiction and fantasy, and deeper things for those who care to look (e.g. pseudoeschata, a hidden autobiography, spiritual insights, themes that parallel the suffering of half the world).

The story begins as our reluctant hero, Thorlainen, finds his mundane and generally pointless life disrupted by a galactic catastrophe just as he thinks of enjoying another hot mug of supersynthocafé. Everyone in the town dies and Thorlainen believes he is the only survivor.

He is wrong: the totalitarian system is still functioning on planet Tellus and he is in mortal danger. He flees his home - just in time. The disheartening idea of an eternal solitary life suddenly evaporates when he meets a young affluent woman with two children - who are expecting him, which is just one of the things he finds mystifying. Chitmaa gives him her passion, her desperate story about her father - and, Thorlainen, as a Non-Commercial-Being, is completely out of his depth. The centre point of the romance in the story describes an impossible relationship that occurs simply because outside forces determine it. However with danger all around them, for the moment, Thorlainen buries these perplexities and concentrates on staying alive and making good their escape.

The climax comes when they are sidetracked to attempt to free a compound full of deportees. At this point, Thorlainen realizes the freedom of all of them ultimately rests on his shoulders, and on his ability to skilfully operate the latest, fastest and untested Aquatransporter ever built.

Zak B. Tjewels spent his youth sailing the Caribbean and Mediterranean and has made sailing, designing, and building boats a way of life. His adventures have provided him with a kaleidoscope of various perspectives. However, Zak's adventurous life hit a reef when he came to live in Finland. His life dramatically changed when he found himself alone bringing up two children. Undaunted, he decided to stay and raise his children in Finland, and then he remarried. It can be tough in a foreign country and more, the '90s recession in Finland hit his family hard and Zak had to switch from designing workboats to studying computers, after which he was successfully employed by a software company as a technical writer, webmaster, and CD designer.

Flight for Survival

Zak B. Tjewels' book, Flee the Tellurian Empire, the second in the series, Serious Pink & Satin Yellow, leads us into a world of fiction and fantasy, and deeper things for those who care to look (e.g. pseudoeschata, a hidden autobiography, spiritual insights, themes that parallel the suffering of half the world).

The story continues as our reluctant hero, Thorlainen finds himself in a desperate situation. Time has run out, as Thorlainen takes command of a ship full of starved and PASC-processed deportees. Their choice is simple: flee for their lives or die.

The untested Aquatransporter functions well but who can help him operate it? They escape by forcing the Aquatransporter to speeds beyond its limit. Then tragedy arrives, as they are tracked mercilessly across the Great Sea. And, others, too, are in trouble on the sea.

Thorlainen is pledged to an affluent, but, he finds Chitmaa cool and often hostile, and he takes solace in the company of Sue Ling, but their friendship is restrained by the overbearing Tellurian social code.

If the death and destruction hurled at the Aquatransporter by the merciless tellurian pursuers was not enough, their vessel is severely damage by a strange galactical event.

These experiences subtly change Thorlainen's way of thinking, his approach to life, and his concept of liberty.

Yet, on and on, these survivors flee. They rescue some elite affluents, which put Thorlainen in a strange situation, but before he can understand what has happened, the sea state changes dramatically...and the Aquatransporter sinks...

Zak B. Tjewels' life has been boats: Grammar School naval cadets, sailing, designing, building... Except for hitchhiking across North Africa and ending up under house arrest in Libya during the revolution, Zak spent his youth sailing the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

One day, and quite unprepared, he found himself in Finland. This country was a complete contrast to those far off sunny islands and, in staying here, Zak met his greatest trials.

Several times, he fled to the sun; back again to Africa, once to visit a missionary in Kenya, and then later, to teach ambulance drivers to drive ambulance boats on Lake Tanganyika for SIDA.

But, Finland is a land of linguists and he stayed there for his children. This decision proved right as, unlike Zak, who has never managed to ever learn Finnish, his children all speak the Finnish official languages and several other languages fluently.
